‘No Shoes, No Shirt, Nosara’
Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, Nosara is rich with natural beauty and archaeological history. Now famous as a surfing and yoga mecca, this serene and unspoiled corner of Costa Rica welcomes visitors with its warm waters and balmy ocean breezes.

Recognized as one of the most beautiful locations in all of Costa Rica, Nosara has enjoyed the protection of both the national park system and decades-old efforts of local citizens to maintain pristine beaches and hundreds of acres of rain forests interspersed with small-scale development.

For generations, the land around Nosara was used mainly for cattle pasture. Large tracts of land were deforested thus greatly diminishing the beauty of the area. However, in the 1970s, a community of foreigners settled in the town and made reforestation a priority. Thick rich forests grow in areas that were once razed for the benefit of cattle. Nosara’s “Proyecto Americano” (American Project) which includes lots in the northern end of Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada and some of the surrounding hills, is a wonderful example of responsible environmental planning and development. A number of homes exist in the area, yet first-time visitors can still experience complete isolation and surround themselves with pristine beaches and lush forests within a tropical paradise.

Nosara serves as an example of “planned growth” that is the model for development in other areas of Costa Rica. The Civic Association was established to guard the interests of the people in the zone as well as the environment. As a result, Nosara boasts the cleanest water table in all of Costa Rica and serves as host to international surfers and yoga enthusiasts alike.
